Do you live in Vienna? Would you be willing to take a photograph for a writer based in San Francisco?

My debut novel THE EXPERT OF SUBTLE REVISIONS features Egon Schiele's Seated Woman with Bent Knees on the cover. Much of the story is set in Vienna AND the Schiele painting will be traveling to Vienna to be part of the Leopold Museum's Changing Times: Egon Schiele’s Last Years, 1914-18 show, which runs from 28 March-13 July.

I would LOVE a photograph of my book in front of the painting in Vienna, but I don't think I'll be able to get there myself. Would anyone be willing to take this shot? The show doesn't start for another couple weeks, but I figured if I start to look now, I might be able to find a volunteer and figure out the best way to get the book there. Multiple cases of people with tourist visas being indefinitely detained by ICE at both the southern and northern US borders makes me wonder how much “world” will be at WorldCon—the big F&SF con—in Seattle this summer.

I certainly would reconsider traveling to the US right now.

I am well aware of the weaknesses of my poetry and I will admit that I am deeply envious of those select few who get to make a living as a poet, just writing poems for a living and not having to really work, but I am also grateful to be a working class poet who has seen true poverty, disability, suffering, family strife, death of loved ones, divorce, betrayal from close friends, spiritual cycles, and all the things that makes life real. I may not have an abundant audience at the tip of my fountain pen, but I do have authenticity of spirit and that is worth a thousand best sellers.

#WritersCoffeeClub Happy International Women’s Day! What female author has inspired you the most?

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Because I read 'Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus' at a very, very, young age. I called the 'monster' Adam. I liked his tragic exploration of the world. It's what inspired me to have the deities in the Ethereal series, be in various stages of discovering the world and consciousness. That viewing existence through new eyes will always be with me.

Got the message below in email today from the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa, where I've previously enjoyed some fun MOOC courses, including a great one about writing poetry. But they obviously do a lot of good work beyond that, and so this is just very sad to see. But we should not avert our eyes to the specific effects of the ongoing savaging of the US government and its effects not only on domestic education but international relations. No good can come of this.

«Dear Friends,

We write today with a difficult update. On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the International Writing Program (IWP) learned that its grants with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, were being terminated. This notification explained that the IWP’s awards “no longer effectuate agency priorities,” nor align “with agency priorities and national interest.” The immediate result was the cancellation of Between the Lines (the IWP’s summer youth program), and the dissolution of Lines and Spaces Exchanges, Distance Learning courses, and Emerging Voices programs. The overall Fall Residency cohort will be reduced by around half due to the loss of federally funded participants; the IWP’s other long-time funding partners, including a combination of donors, grants, foreign ministries of culture, and NGOs, will continue to support writers.»
