Found in the Midnight Zone: they're tiny, blobby, butt-shaped, and glow in the dark. What the heck are they? Scientists are still figuring them out.

Exciting discovery! Scientists have unveiled the mystery of sea turtles' 'lost years' using GPS tracking. Young turtles actively swim, not just drift with currents, providing new insights into their early life stages.

Shreveport Aquarium in Louisiana has a mystery on its hands after a baby shark was born in a habitat that had only females. Yoko the swell shark hatched on Jan. 3, with the team saying "the two female sharks present in the tank had not been in contact with a male in over 3 years." @npr says scientists have two main theories. Here's more.
I finally finished the #art project I've been working on for a bit: a #marinebiology #NSFW fun fact calendar! This is January's picture/fact. Available on my Etsy:

(Yes I'm aware it's almost February, but if you also have #ADHD then maybe you haven't gotten a wall #calendar for 2025 yet)

American educator and zoologist Cornelia Clapp died #OTD in 1934.
Clapp was a pioneering zoology researcher and leading ichthyology scholar. Her work on the toadfish was instrumental in correcting the idea that its egg was attached by a "sucker" to the yolk stalk, as she discovered that it was instead adhered with a disc of "transparent secretion" that could be separated from the membrane.

Day 5 #ArtAdventCalendar: What’s inside this cigar box? A black smoker - with giant tube worms (Riftia pachyptila) for #InsertAnInvert2024. I’ve had the idea for this #multimedia in my head for years! Cigar box, collaged papers, gouache, Posca pen, glue, washi tape.
I’ve never had the opportunity to go on a research cruise to a hydrothermal vent, though I have contributed to plans for monitoring
This whale species is so rare it’s never been seen alive. A dissection may decode its mysteries.
From @AssociatedPress: "The list of what scientists don’t know about spade-toothed whales is longer than what they do know. They don’t know where in the ocean the whales live, why they’ve never been spotted in the wild, or what their brains look like."

While exploring the Tonga Trench in the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, researchers captured extremely rare footage of a Magnapinna squid with arms several times the length of its body. And, yes, it was walking. @LiveScience has the footage: https://flip.it/eHKEAp

These beloved sea creatures are dying. Can human medicine save them?
From @Vox: "To thwart a disease that’s decimating Caribbean coral reefs, scientists are turning to an unlikely drug."
"Prehistoric" relative of sharks struggle to make a comeback near Florida.
USA Today reports on the endangered smalltooth sawfish. "They are a species of elasmobranch, a group including rays, skates and sharks, that have no bones or skeletons, only cartilage, and they eat fish, shrimp and crabs."
A few facts:
1. The goal is to advertise advisors/positions, *not whole programs*.
2. Normally, we get 40-50 positions every year.
3. If you submit your name, I will bug you *once* to ask you to advertise the list. After that, I'll leave you alone. Your name/email is not used for any other purpose.
