T2
Had to give this one a peep when it floated across the TL today. New local anarcho-crusty dbeat sung in spanish! It's downtuned, it's political, it's Montreal winter music. The soundtrack to the next time you gotta get bundled up and stroll around your neighbourhood on a snowy night. The songs feel a bit short sometimes, but I guess I'd rather have that than too long. It's truly new band season and I hope I get to pump my fist to OCIOSA live soon!
#funADay

https://ociosa.bandcamp.com

T2
Feeling absolutely fucking awful today, everything is setting me off, so much dread at the mere thought of my allegedly "fun" listening-to-punk-music activity. It's a bit early in the game for a skip day, but if it's not fun, we skip, whatever.

In a break between tasks I had a fleeting but positive thought about the intro to the NO STATIK record from day 1, and was like hm... maybe some noise? The idea didn't immediately make me want to die so I poked around on the tape shelves and found this split that I was given as a thanks for riso printing the covers and inserts (but had never actually listened to, oops). The tape is a collab between two projects, MOT and VIOLENT SHOGUN who "Mangle" each other's contributions. I enjoy noise shows sometimes but I don't really know shit about any of it, which makes writing anything descriptive kind of hard. Regardless, this soothed my hot sad brain and it didn't make anything worse, which is a win for a day like today.

#FunADay

T2
A rec from @plgagnon while gabbing between sets at Madhouse! I decided to give this newer Boston band an "ideal circumstances" listen, aka blasting on my bluetooth speaker while dodging cars on the short but extremely sketchy bike ride between my house and the grocery store, and it was the perfect length and energy for that task. Definitely a solid if somewhat generic Hardcore demo (not a bad thing imo), overall it's pretty fun and upbeat, with a few melodic sprinkles, which meshes well with the very emotional lyrics. Listening again on slightly-less-fucked speakers while writing this, the instruments and drums all sound really good individually and in combo, but it's not overproduced or too polished. Standout feature for me is the vocals, because the singer's voice cracks a bunch and I fucking love that shit.

https://cantlosebhc.bandcamp.com/album/demo-2024
#funADay

T2
I've got heavy equipment to move all day so I'm starting fun early with a record plucked from the stacks. Luckily I unknowingly picked some excellent morning hardcore! The entirety of side A is one long vibey noise track with dischordant strings, punctuated by occasional human screams and pulsing beats. Eventually a catchy bassline shows up and draws you into a short song (guitar, drums, etc) for a few minutes before back into the noise till the end of the side. A bold choice to put the noise on side A but I was really into easing into it! The B side is like a regular hardcore record and WOW this does it for me. Catchy hc riffs punctuated by blasts and tempo changes, leans PV but the kind that makes me feel like you're getting smarter, not stupider (I love the stupid kind too, maybe I shoulda picked some for my heavy lifting psych-up). Love the vocals and the lyrics are cool, and even include little extra explanations for each song. I wasn't sure if I'd actually heard or just "heard of" this band before but I am now a certified fan.

Side note: @mart0 gave me the fun fact that the bass player in this band is the Terminal Escape wizard 🧙
#FunADay

T2
I am so whooped from the show so its just a little digital scribble today. First stab at some concepts I'm working on for a friend's tape art :) #FunADay

T2
Busy day so here's some quick korean sweet potatoes that I'm about to throw in the oven (perfect snack/handwarmer combo) #FunADay

T2
Soy Curls. This is my last bag, you cannot buy them in Quebec :( #FunADay

T2
I need MORE PUNKS for a poster I'm working on for the show this weekend, so this AM I reworked and enlarged a small sketch of a black punk I did for a flyer a few months ago. Starting from a basic shape I already had on deck made it really easy to get going. Happy #funADay everyone!

T2
For my #funADay this year I'm gonna draw every day and post what I work on. I don't have any parameters, other than that I'd like to do a mix of drawing on paper and digitally. I had to do an annoying and slightly scary bureaucracy errand today so afterward I treated myself to a trip to the fancy stationary store and picked out a special pad and some fresh utensils :)

FUN-A-DAY 2024
It's almost time for Fun-A-Day 2024! This will be the third year that 438punk.house has "hosted" Fun-A-Day for our instance, but anyone is welcome to participate, on- or offline. Here's how to join in:

1. Pick an activity or project
2. Try to do it every single day for the whole month of February
3. Post updates using the hashtag #FunADay

Choose something that will give you a bit of pleasure or meaning each day, practice a specific skill you want to improve at by the end of the month, or try to speedrun a larger project like a demo or a comic. The point is to make this shitty, cold month a little bit more tolerable by having routines and sharing support and encouragement with each other!

For updates and FUN, follow this account and follow the hashtag #FunADay (or mute it if it's not your thing!)

∴ esoterik ∴
final day of february so i owe you all a post about #FunADay.

i have been working on it though the pace has slowed considerably, which is partially why i haven't been as good about updating the log.

T2
Holy shit. This was me the entire time I was reading this 🥺🥺🥺 but like, not in a patronizing way! This zine is sooooo sick. Its really thoughtful and hopeful and angry and critical and has a really cool diy vibe. Its written by and towards kids/teenagers but I recommend it for anyone if you need a little boost of hope. Equal parts anarchy for youths and youth lib for anarchists. My favourite part was the spread about how awesome and nice riding the subway is and how public transit can be a means of youth liberation (although not currently equitable or perfect by any means).

I printed out a copy on a whim after I remembered seeing @Filler_PGH post it a few days ago. I worked all day and then troubleshot my printer and this was such a sweet treat for a day when i didnt have a ton of time or energy for #FunADay. I will definitely be keeping a few copies on hand the next time I'm tabling!

🚇🚇🚇🚇🚇/5

T2
I've been super curious about this zine since I saw it pop up. Incredible title! Also I love this cover, another beaut from haters café.

"What would an insurrectionary anarchist position thoroughly rooted in black radicalism and black revolt mean? How does the current white insurrectionary anarchist milieu fail? How can Black revolutionaries extend the insurrection?" Fuck yes. This is a very powerful and provocative text, with enough blistering critiques to go around (and have seconds). I'm extremely stoked on the conversations that this and other black anarchist texts seem to be opening up in the last few years –building on aspects of the black radical tradition in the states and drawing inspiration from anticolonial struggles all over the world, while cutting a way forward through so much murk and recuperation of the last few years with an insurrectionary flame. Haters Café also posted a few responses to the piece, and those have been great to read–if part of the goal of the piece is to facilitate these conversations among black anarchists (and hopefully among nonblack anarchists), it's working. For my part, I'm gonna be marinating on this one for a bit while perusing responses and the absolutely stacked recommended reading page.

🔥🔥🔥🔥/5, recommend.
#FunADay

T2
I only managed to get my hands on a few scattered zines in high school, but most of my exposure to punk, zine culture, traveling and photocopie scams came from a generous older friend gifting me "Despite Everything" for my 15th?? Birthday. I struggled to read the tiny handwriting on weirdly formatted pages, and the stuff he wrote about was so alien to my suburban midwest life that it might have well been written in another language...but I wanted to learn! So I devoured it over and over.

I hadn't read this issue, or any Cometbus past the 90s-00s. The plot: Green Day invited Aaron to come on tour to Thailand, Singapore, HK and Japan with them...so yeah, the title is a little misleading (he thought they were going to mainland China but the dates ended up getting cancelled.) It's almost 100 pages of musings on authenticity, fame, punk, male friendship, the tension between traveling rough and luxe, foreignness, etc. Candy for my cooped-up brain, and I felt genuinely transported by reading this today. I think you could take a cynical read on this as the band inviting Aaron along as a grab at authenticity, but the relationships between all of them are authentically weird and complex–and he doesn't shy away from writing about them in gory detail.

☕ ☕ ☕ /5
#FunADay

T2
Yesterday was a big reading and thinking day so I wanted to take it kinda easy today. Found this in the zine pile and was like, "wow this is oddly specific and directed exactly toward me, looks fun!"

Now THIS is a trenchcoat zine–its short, its earnest, theres really ugly but also sort of cool graphics that are a mix of like FTP-era bad insurrecto design (huge nostalgia points for me) mashed up with varsity letter hardcore aesthetic (which I also love).

The content is exactly what it says on the cover. "Some notes on insurrectionary anarchism" from KKA, which i kinda zoned out for... Its fine, it's a classic. Then theres a short essay from an anarchist POC about claiming straight edge after growing up in the hood, and watching the drug war keep people in their community in cycles of poverty and immiseration. It also laments the lack of support for folks struggling with addiction or trying to resist intoxication culture in the anarchist scene. Super short, super impactful essay, I thought it was great. The last page lists some anarchist prisoner addresses and a short thing about why its important to write to prisoners and best practices (fuck yeah!!!!). Would love to pick something like this up at a punk show. #funADay

:xvx: :xvx: :xvx: :xvx: /5

T2
As far as zines go, I'm usually more interested in ones that I could keep stocked in my nefarious trenchcoat, in case I want to slide up to a disgrunteled-seeming person, pass them a relevant zine, and whisper "have you considered... anarchy?"

This is not one of those! It's dense, deep winter, low-point reflection type stuff that meanders all over the place and talks about a bunch of stuff from the Anarchist milieu in Spain that I'm not familiar with. It's candy for dorks like me who have spent too much (but never enough) time thinking about meta-questions of being anarchists in the world, situating ourselves in terrains of struggle and wondering what is the best thing to do. Truly the perfect #FunADay zine. I love it even though I don't agree with everything–but it's not the kind of text that demands my total agreement.

Is it a good zine though? I found myself wondering if this is the best format for seasoned anarchists to consume dense texts. So I did an experiment and read part of it out in the world, while I was running errands. Maybe to my surprise, it was much nicer than reading it in a browser.

I'd put it on my table at a very niche anarchist event, but not in my trenchcoat.
:anarchism: :anarchism: :anarchism: :anarchism: :anarchism: /5

T2
This zine contains three essays which offer perspectives on the 2001 riots in Cincinnati, OH after the murder of 19-year-old Timothy Thomas by police after he was pulled over for driving while black. Another super formative zine for me, and I was stoked to revisit it (although I couldn't find a PDF of this particular cover, which is burned in my head–scamming the colour covers for these always took extra work but it was worth it!)

The counterinsurgency tatics used by the police, state, NPIC and organized white supremacists to quell and recuperate black revolt and to try and prevent meaningful solidarity between radicals of different races and classes will be super familiar to most readers in 2023. At this point a lot more anarchists in the US (and to some degree in Canada) have experience engaging with this type of revolt, but this is still a really interesting artifact and worth reading. It doesn't shy away from frank talk about uncomfortable experiences around participating in these protests as a white person, and pushes nonblack anarchists to keep reflecting on how to respectfully and meaningfully relate to these types of struggles.

:acab: :acab: :acab: :acab: /5
#FunADay
