Linux auf ARM-Laptops und Chromebooks | c’t uplink
In dieser Folge des c’t uplink geht es um die Frage, wie gut oder schlecht Linux auf Geräten läuft, die eigentlich nicht dafür gedacht sind.
A colleague gave me an old Macbook Pro 9.2, which was too slow even to open Safari or read emails...
After upgrading the ram from 4 to 16gb, changing the old HDD for a new SSD, installing #Fedora... I made a Zoom call while I had 20 tabs open on Firefox, with Nextcloud, Thunderbird, Telegram and Emacs open in the background.
But the thing that amazed me was the strange sense of #empowerment (?) I felt during the process.
This #gamer loves their #PC and their #MacBook Pro, so a #KVM #switch and Thunderbolt 4 #dock come in super handy in their #setup. https://www.cultofmac.com/setups/setup-kvm-switch
@markgurman #Deepseek proved we are just at the very early stages of AI. When it brought all the major AI tech stocks down, #Apple was the only one not affected. When MP3 players were the rage, Apple was missing in action for years until the #iPod, the industry was 4 years ahead on Apple. The same goes for smart phones. And again, the last I checked, every techie seems to be running LLMs on #MacBook Pros.

yeesh. a macbook would actually be fantastic for my long covid brain fog.
(Yes, I did forget what brain fog was. I've been describing it as 'mental fatigue' and 'thinking hurts recently'.)
But as long as I get pre-M1 chips, I should be fine, right?
As much as anything is, in this economy run on non-consent, stealthing, theft, violation of human rights, and disregard of convivial contentment.
I just added a #TalosLinux 1.9.3 (#Talos) #Vagrant box to the #ARM64 collection. This allows you to run Talos on your #AppleSilicon #MacBook. This is control-plane only, but you can patch the manifest to also run workloads.
You can find it right here:

Dear #Apple,
When I tell my #MacBook to shut down, I expect it to STAY THAT WAY until I push the button to turn it back on! The last thing I need is for this thing to ruin its own battery with a full discharge that I don't even know is happening.
And no, opening the lid does NOT qualify as pushing a button.
That is all.

@point5a @Vivaldi @johnbeen So, I happened to get my #VivaldiMail address, after all. I previously did it, but I still need to set it up in on my #MacBook app for downloading. Meanwhile, I also now have a secondary #Mastodon account at #VivaldiSocial.
I have also been completing my #Fediverse, #Mastodon, #BlueSky, and other connections at #WordPress, thanks to #ActivityPub, #Jetpack, #Webfinger, #Friends, #Hum, #Webmention, and other #plugins. Thanks also to people like @pfefferle and many others who have been making these plugin applications happen over the years. Big improvements! Almost there in my setup… getting better everyday. I’ve been incredibly productive, and on the way! Thanks to the community here!! @mastodonmigration too.
Update: I found an affordable Chromebook that should do the job for now, and I'm gonna take my Mac back home and wipe the entire thing and reinstall the OS. She doesn't have anything of substance that she needs to save to the Cloud, but I'm going to double check her documents etc. before I do that.
Thanks everybody for your advice! We'll see how this saga continues...
I don't have a ton of followers on this account, so I would love if people would boost this for reach :
I need #tech advice from #computer people who also have #aging parents.
I think it's time for me to replace my mom's laptop with something that she can't kill. Or, if she kills it, something I can replace each time for less than $500.
I'm wondering if a netbook type of device would work? I have no idea what's available in that realm anymore.
I am loathe to get her something in the #Google 'verse because fuck Google. And boy howdy do I *not* want to go back into #Windows with her. That is my least favorite realm in which to play tech support.
However, if there is something out there that would suit her needs and not give me as many headaches, and it happens to be Google or Microsoft, and I can get it for less than $500, I will consider it.
Right now, she has *my* 2020 M1 #MacBook Air, because she killed *her* 2020 M1 MacBook Air with viruses -- and by spilling coffee on it.
It is still sitting on my workbench because no tech guys in town would touch it. All of them said that she needed to buy a new machine.
I loaned her my machine knowing full well that eventually, she would message me to let me know that it had "all these viruses!" on it.
That day was today.
I have no goddamn idea where she goes online to pick this stuff up, but the trashy email lists she's addicted to and Facebook are the two main suspects.
So my main question is: is there a senior-proof, laptop-style machine that I could get for her that would be more of a walled garden and might cause me fewer headaches so I can stop her ruining these expensive #Apple machines?
A side question would be: if we keep her in the Appleverse, is there a way I can spy on her? Is there something that I can install so I can see remotely what she's doing? I am the Admin on this machine and I believe she just has regular user privileges.
I know that's a radical invasion of privacy, even if I get her permission, but if she's going to keep ruining expensive laptops, I need to know where she's going and how she's messing them up. It would rock to be able to log into them remotely to try to fix them. (Is that even a thing?)
The only advantage to her having a Mac is I know them the best, and it does play nice with her phone. Also I can see all of her devices on Find My. But as she never travels with her laptop, I don't think she needs an Apple laptop anymore.
My sister and I got her a 10th generation iPad that works with a Bluetooth keyboard for her birthday last October. I was hoping that she would switch some of her behaviors over to that, because I can keep it more locked down. But nope.
I'm really at a loss for how to proceed as she ages. She considers herself tech savvy, and I don't want to have to keep gently shaming her for going to these fucking awful sites and picking up computer diseases.
She hates using her iPhone (13 Pro) for Facebook, email, or banking. I'm pretty sure that banking on a laptop with viruses on it is how she got scammed last year, prior to me switching out her machine.
I appreciate advice from people who have dealt with this with aging relatives. Thanks for reading.
Hi fedi friends, looking for some advice. I have (most of) a Macbook Air that I'd like to revitalize with some flavor of Linux. I know it's Intel-based. Model number on the battery is A1496, which seems to be a common part across a whole slew of older Macbook Air models. I do not have the botton shell for this machine, so I don't think there's any other way to identify the model. It is a 13" screen.
Main question: if it is repairable, any specific distro you'd recomment for Mac Intel hardware? I like Debian-based stuff (primarily Mint, MX/AntiX, etc) but I'm open to suggestions for Mac hardware.
Secondary question: any way to determine the specific model with the info I've provided? Or will I just have to wait until I get a charger and power it on?
Appreciate any help/suggestions!
I wonder if ProxMox would work on this thing. The i5 CPU supports virtualization. I have never used ProxMox and would like to learn. I also love that I can double the storage in this laptop with a $11 USB stick
Obviously not for performance.

Look how cute it is. Under 3lbs (barely 1kg). What a great form factor. But severely under resourced (Intel i5 1.7GHz) for anything today other than the basics. #pleaseBoost #poll #linux #mac #reuse #experiment #apple #macbook
Question:
I have come into possession of a mid-2012 MacBook Air.
4GB RAM and 128GB SSD
Just updating to 10.15 after erasing everything.
What Linux distribution would be best if I want to play with docker, CLI, server.
I would keep it dual boot just so I can restore it to native Mac after playing with it.
I am most familiar with Debian.
Suggestions and thoughts welcome.
