Meine Freundin und Ich haben gestern Abend #aplaguetaleinnocence mit 100% Gamerscore durchgespielt und heute starten wir, dank des Xbox Gamepass, mit Teil 2: #APlagueTaleRequiem
A Plague Tale 2, spoilers everywhere
I remember enjoying A Plague Tale a lot, despite of all its faults. A Plague Tale 2 is very much 20 hours of the same thing, I think the core issue is that this particular title can only really sustain one game of interest, and then the good to bad ratio starts to tip the wrong direction. By the end it solidly start to feel as formulative and uninspiring as The Last of Us Lite. And I do NOT like The Last of Us.
Say, the theme of loss of innocence. In 2020s, a theme of "loss of innocence" is like 1990s "the real treasure is the friends we made along the way". Not to say never do it, but chances are four games last week already did it better. The first game has this particular detail I loved, where Amicia first escaped to the local village that she's technically the noble to them. None of the villages wanted to help her: they feared and hated the de Runes. That implicated that Amicia's family had always been the oppressors, especially given the context of whatever weird shit Beatrice was up to. Amicia could afford her innocence directly by exploitation, and in a way I'm never surprised by how quickly she adjusted to being a thrill-seeking serial murderer, because I don't think she ever considered anyone not her peers really people. That was interesting, and absolutely nothing was done about this. By the second game, there hadn't been a single moment where it felt like, hey this is an interesting take. None.
As much I like Amicia, the way the game handled her as a comically physically prow teen girl rapidly became a parody of itself. I didn't care if anything bad happened to her, if she's propelled into Jupiter she'd be fine. The issue is that this really isn't what the game's mood wanted her position to be in. What's worse is it reminded me a lot of Tomb Raider 2013 (minus the weird af racism). There was almost a fetish-like approach to Amicia getting hurt, I was less unsettled by how over the top the violence against Amicia was, and more by I know there's a significant proportion of players fapping to those scenes. But don't worry, none of the injuries would stop her from being generically pretty for some reasons?
The story was um, I didn't hate it, just didn't love it. It really made me wish someone just sniped Hugo in the head in game one chapter 2 or something. Amicia's full blown serial murderer, which to be fair how I played probably was more an issue than how the game casually handled it. Hugo, intentionally or not, essentially now have killed more people than the entire nuclear weapons in human history. At some point this whole, you are a nicer kid but we could've solved this a lot earlier.
I do adore Hugo. He moved past being a precious human shaped property for the protagonist to use in excuse of being a shitty person, but really gained his own agency. I loved that.
I just never felt the kind of, man these cast really behaved so believably like the first game. The relationship between Melie and Amicia continued to be my favourite. Amicia was meant to be the class enemy, but she's not a snob, pulled her weight, and generally was great company to have. They truly bonded over months, only for Melie to fully recognise Amicia would always prioritise Hugo over anyone else which made Amicia incredibly dangerous, so Melie outed there immediately.
I also personally preferred a lot more of first game's a bunch of children working together trying to survive a trash situation because they had no choice, over a lot of second game was just awful parent who disrefarded her daughter's safety over things like, fetch some herbs.
Gameplay was basically trying to figure out what the game even wanted you to do. The communicating style this game has really was... Something.
Given how 2 ended, I don't think there will be a 3. Just as well. Come to think about it, whatever happened to the English-French war? Remember the first game the war was a big deal?
For the lack of better way to describe it, A Plague Tale 2 is significantly more tiring to play than the first. I'd say about 80% of the game is repeat a stage trial and error and have your face repetitively eaten by rats, until this one time you accidentally found out what the game wants you to do.
I normally hate using a guide. This game is so poor at communicating its instructions, that even guides need guides.
Hard puzzles are awesome. Unclear expectation is not the correct way to create hard puzzles.
Chapter 9 was visually stunning and utterly a bore. Mostly because I don't know what this game wanted me to do.
Chapter 10 is good again. I'm glad finally Hugo is showing some personality. And um people around Amicia really need to tell her more about what a casual serial murderer she is, but it's also because this is how I play her. Um. Soz?
A Plague Tale 2, Chapter 8 spoilers
Let's be real though. Has there been someone who had been kind to Amicia and Hugo, including the NPCs, who didn't have disaster and ruin rain onto them immediately after?
A Plague Tale 2, Chapter 7 spoilers
Dear lord, even a rogue soldier who tried to kill Amicia is nicer to Amicia than her mother.
Chapter V: I hate Beatrice. No really. I don't think people would've used their doorman as poorly as Beatrice used her daughter.
What's worse is Amicia just accepts that her entire purpose is to be her brother's cannon fodder.
Tbh I enjoy the second game a lot less because the dynamics are so different. It's not just a bunch of children trying to survive anymore, but they were being so so used by their shitty adults.
Lol Amicia is so very okay with her mum doesn't love nor like her. Her mum pretty much treated her like a disposable foot soldier, sending her to her death many times as long as Hugo benefits.
I'm not even convinced Beatrice loves Hugo. More like, Hugo is too useful for her.
It's the ultimate Adults are Useless The Game. I still just cannot get over how much the cast of children genuinely like each other, I can believe wholeheartedly that they are life time companions, but also the kind that can be broken up by circumstances. It's just so believable.
It's not a real A Plague Tale if it doesn't crash all the time.
I love how quickly Amicia went full scale serial murderer. Basically, how a child would adapt to violent environment.
Seems like you are stuck with the English voice acting? There isn't an option to change it anywhere. Not in Languages, not in Audio.
Please be good. The best thing about the first game was how the cast were behaving like literal children that they are, I adored the cast so much. I hope they don't lose that.
My (one weird) complaint I had, was I want the French cast to speak French, and English cast to speak English. It was quite one-or-another. The comfortable mixing of people's languages appropriate to their background was so good in Binary Domain.
