Probably the most authoritative crowd counting association in Serbia estimates between 275k and 325k people today. They emphasise that this is likely an undercount due to uncertainties in other parts of the city at that exact point in time.

To put those undercounted numbers into perspective:

- That is between 15% and 19.5% of Belgrade's total metro area population.
- That is between 4.2% and 4.9% of Serbia's total population.

Today in Belgrade, Serbia's largest anti government protest in history.

"Tens of thousands of people descended on Belgrade on Saturday for a mass rally seen as a culmination of months-long protests against Serbia's populist President Aleksandar Vucic's government.

Large crowds of flag-waving protesters clogged the downtown area of the capital despite occasional rain, with people hardly able to move and many stuck hundreds of meters away from the planned protest venue.

Protesters converged after meeting up at several agreed-on protest venues in various parts of the city, which was placed on high alert. All public transport was cancelled."

Last year, we took a week to drive slowly from Berlin along the "Balkan route" via the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia and North Macedonia to my husband's Greek family's house on the Ionian Sea. This picture is from #NoviSad in #Serbia, where, like everywhere else, we met the nicest people and spent a lovely evening. I always think about it now when I hear news about today's remarkable protests there.
