It's a rainy Sunday night here so I'm browsing #GlobalTalk! Who has a color printer available?
About to try for 31 Macs on #globaltalk
So with all the ImageWriters connected to #GlobalTalk, has anybody worked out how to send songs instead of printouts yet? ;)
Edit: Updated this post. I should have guest access setup now. I missed the step very clearly laid out in the documentation. Oops. Happy #marchintosh and #globaltalk 2025! Yay!
Apparently I can see 90 #GlobalTalk zones, and over the past couple of days tried to leave greetings everywhere.
Here are the results:
- success (left greetings): was 59 - now 61
- no server on zone: was 23 - now 21
- other/trouble: 8
MDN issue 8 is here and slowing going encapsulated packet by encapsulated packet (it's a sad state of affairs when perfectly legitimate AppleTalk packets must be ushered across the internet inside TCP but this is what we deal with) across the #globaltalk interwebs to various printer end points.

My Lisa joins #GlobalTalk as an AppleShare server
There is a new alpha version of #GlobalTalk chat available on Blackbird.
This new version 0.3 uses a lower level of AppleTalk communication instead of HyperCard's built-in Process-to-Process communication method.
This lower level method is asynchronous and can wait for results without locking up the UI, so hopefully it solves the massive lag issues people have been having.
If anyone is around right now to test it out, please do!
#MARCHintosh
Hey all. I’ll be leaving my IIci on from now through Sunday evening (-8 GMT). It would make my month if folks left some cards on my Mac. I don’t have much to share other than some fun all ages artwork in 256 color PICT format. This is my first Globaltalk and it’s just been so fun. My zone is “rexouiums”. I’m row 154 on the sheets. Thanks so much all and happy mac’ing!
Rapidly approaching at a slow pace the v1.0.5 release of my GlobalTalk support files.
Nothing major - the OCI .command file was missing, I created a folder-based LW8 installer and replaced the disk image-based one on the install disk, and a few changes in the AIR Admin’s Guide Addendum.
Let me know if anything needs work or adding! Release some time in the next 1-2 days.
One of the interesting things about AIR is that it can continue to run in the background when other things have gone pear-shaped.
Here we see that the Airaga AIR machine’s Finder has crashed, and I can’t do anything but Restart, but the zone continues to be visible from WOzFest HQ AIR machine and you can still navigate and connect to the file share running on the crashed machine!
So, here's my actually-planned-for-this-year #MARCHintosh project. Attached is a photo of four very dusty containers full of floppy disks. These are the actual disks from my childhood IIfx!
Most of these disks aren't original. The originals lived at Dad's workplace. He would periodically bring home software from work, make a copy of the disks, and return the originals to work. These were, I'm told, the "off-site backups", in case there was a fire at the workplace or something like that. But we also had all this software installed on the family IIfx so Dad could read any files that he brought home from work with him.
Of course, we also bought our own software for the home, and those are mixed in with these disks as well. And that stack of CD-ROMs in the top left are my MacAddict cover disks - those are already archived.
Anyway, because these are just consumer-grade diskettes, they degrade quicker than the professionally-manufactured original ones. I've already lost a few, so I want to get these archived! And of course, anything that doesn't already exist on the Garden will be uploaded there and shared on #GlobalTalk as well.
(expect this to be a long-ass foone-style thread with lots of updates over several days)
My ImageWriter II on #GlobalTalk has been unusually quiet lately...
If you've got something fun to print, send it to my printer on the JUPAK network! It also prints in color! A Dropbox is also available on the Galaksija netatalk share for all your digital messages
Tried out InterPrint on my IIfx today and I've got to say, it works beautifully!
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/interprint-112
This Chooser extension allows you to print to LPR queues over TCP/IP. But unlike the IP printing support in LaserWriter 8 (which "requires" Mac OS 8, though I think you can manually install it on as low as System 7.5.3), InterPrint works all the way down to System 6.0.5! It fully supports PostScript, too.
What this means for me is that after #MARCHintosh is over, I can repurpose my Raspberry Pi, which currently acts as an AppleTalk print server for my local network (and #GlobalTalk, by extension).
