i just learned this yesterday but: if you're trans and you were born in the state of New Jersey, there's a fastpass discounted system in place to ammend your birth documents.
https://www.nj.gov/health/vital/correcting-vital/sexdesignation/
it costs 6$ if you're just doing gender marker, 8$ if you're doing name as well, 10$ total for an extra (second) copy of the new birth cert. they obliterate the old record through all state systems & replace it with the corrected one. this takes 8-10 weeks. and they have a badass name: Record Modification Unit.
it includes nb options
it includes options for parents w trans kids
someone in 2018 understood the need for this and absolutely nailed their assignment perfectly.
i think every state should model on this tbh
@hi_cial thanks for the info! I didn’t realize they obliterated the old information. That makes me more confident with my updated birth certificate.
@Melezioh i think technically it goes deep under lock and key in the capitol and can only be unsealed by a judges order but like its not at the town halls so if the passport office or w/e calls they will be told your corrected info and the only thing on file will be corrected info
@hi_cial that’s pretty awesome, still.
@Melezioh yeah!!! life saver for sure!!
@hi_cial Not saying that this is a bad thing, but the last time i asked new jersey for any document they said it would take at least 6 months. So kudos for whoever transformed this bureaucracy into something useful!
@kmmfoo RIGHT?? last time i looked for ammending birth docs they required surgical notes too. this was such an unexpected but needed win
