For most communities the New Year began with the first full moon of the first month.

It was customary to eat 'azuki-gayu' (小豆粥), a rice gruel mixed with red adzuki beans, for health and to exorcise evil spirits.
Red was considered a protective colour, especially against disease.

The front garden of Torin-in, sprinkled with snow.

Torin-in is typically closed to the public and is a functioning temple, meaning most of the food is prepared by the monks that live and work here.

I think our bird of the year for 2025 should be the water rail. They are small and adorable and they live in ditches making horrible yelling noises at the world and I think that's an energy that we can all get behind this year.

A water rail in a ditch bottom with some grass and black, damp leaf-litter. The bird itself has a down-curved red beak and long ish legs, with a grey face and chest and patterned tan and dark brown feathers on top of its head and down its back. It has some other dappled feathering on the side of the body. It is staring down at the mud, probably because it thinks there may be food in there somewhere.
