I just spent 10 minutes zooming into every dish and menu item from a Cambodian restaurant in Seattle to check if it was truly serving the Cambodian Teochew food that I was wanting (very similar to the Vietnamese Teochew and Singapore Teochew food I like). I think it is, but the best way to confirm is to check by eating there (tomorrow).
One of the challenges of looking for familiar foods is I can find it across many 'countries' but it's the same dish but with a different name in another language. There are some hints, though.
Kuay teow in Thai, Kuy teav in Khmer, kway teow in Malay, all from the same root words in Teochew
I was telling a friend about the old Teochew names for Southeast Asian cities.
I wrote it down somewhere and I want to make a map of old SE Asian port names in Teochew
Swatow, homeland of the Teochews, was one of the first ports in China to open internationally hundreds of years ago. Many of these names I heard from my grandparents, still hear among older people from Vietnam and Thailand, but all the names are being replaced by Mandarin place names now.
I did this research some time ago
- Pontianak, Kalimantan was 坤甸 (khun diang)
- Jakarta was 巴斜 (pah sia)
- Phnom Penh was 金塔 (ghim tahp)

Woke up.
Made some chai tow kway. Classic Teochew food. Especially eaten on lunar new year, which starts in 2 days.
In our #Teochew language, chai tow means “radish or turnip“, while kway means “cake”. The dish was originally from Southern China & Teochew immigrants brought it to Singapore in the late 19th century.
I like eating them by dipping into a soy sauce/red vinegar/hot chili paste sauce mix.
Things to keep me afloat: Wuyi Origin’s Fan Shu Xiang (sweet potato scent) oolong.
As a Chaozhou person I have a deeply held preference for Chaozhou style oolongs and this (and other dancongs and ya shi) are my faves. Can I have many faves?

I miss gnawing leftover chicken bones & sucking out the marrow, with my patriarch Grandpa. I'm making some soup stock with chicken bones & remembered all the times that me & Gramps sat by ourselves at a table away from rest of our family to eat chicken bone marrow & laughing over family stories shared.

I'm probably going to get bangs again - early next year. This was just under 3 years ago. My friend Kate dyed & cut my hair at the Old Hat Shoppe in downtown #VictoriaBC. I look older without bangs & younger with them. I'm turning 50 on February 3rd & think I'll get bangs for my birthday 
Made some of our family's Teochew #Cholon style, black pepper & soy braised pork with cucumbers & steamed rice. The braised sauce is great poured over rice & cucumbers. We are eating it with a small bowl of chicken pho flavoured broth soup with green onions, cilantro & bits of soft tofu(not pictured). Our family's #AsianBreakfast today

From Thursday. My nephew's 2nd birthday.
Heng/Raven loved the trains gifts the most. He really loves trains after he went on his first train ride in Summer at the BC Forest Discovery Centre. Heng likes saying: Choo-choo 
He also loves block puzzles & putting pieces together.

Heng/Raven came over for his 2nd birthday, yesterday. We had a wonderful time, celebrating with family

"Your daughter is a stupid fool! She works for free. Only fools work for free!" - my 5th patriarch Uncle Tai (who has internalized racism virus).
My Dad (older brother to capitalist brainwashed Uncle) - "My daughter is no fool. My daughter stands up for what is right & she isn't paid to do it. She is no fool & suffers no fools. You just hate her because she told you that you are just like greedy racist white men, driven by money over everything. She's right. You're wrong."
I fucking miss my Dad a lot!
