Amazon is getting rid of the option for Echo devices to process Alexa voice requests locally
From March 28th, Amazon will send everything you say - all audio utterances - to the cloud, removing support for "processing on device". Billed as necessary to support Voice ID + Alexa+ features, there are significant implications for #privacy #VoiceAssistant

Google arguably has the most useful voice assistant on smartphones, and it's casting that aside to make its shitty AI the default voice assistant on Android. Now users can pay $20/month to have pointless conversations with an assistant that can't take notes or tell you the local weather.
I've been saying for the longest time that @homeassistant and @PINE64 really need to collaborate on a #FOSS #VoiceAssistant #smartSpeaker.
I mean one prefers to focus on software with a strong community, the other prefers to focus on hardware with community provided software. Meanwhile we have the megacorps shifting funding from smartspeakers to AI.
It just seems like a no-brainer (not saying easy!) to me.
@finner Yeah, I'd be curious to know as well. It seems like voice assistants in Home Assistant are coming along at quite the pace.
I wish I could set the Apple voice assistant to respond to "House robot..." instead of "Hey Siri...". I am wary of anthropomorphizing computer programs, especially with a corporation behind them.
At least I can set it to a masculine-presenting voice so it isn't also showing up as "compliant femme-gendered lackey".
Did I get that right, that Home Assistant is only usable* with HACS which is only usable with a Microsoft Account (github)? Any workarounds?
*every tutorial I have been checking referred to HACS at some point.
I am interested in controlling Teufel Raumfeld devices with M5stack Atom Echo devices and installed voice assistant. But it feels not right to do this with a MS product.

Dear #Lazyweb,
If a project is already written to compile to Armv7, how hard would it likely be to compile for ARMv8? Are changes generally needed in the code, or is it just a case of running the compiler on ARMv8 hardware?
Asking out of interest in compiling the #Genie #FOSS #VoiceAssistant on the OG #PinePhone / #PinePhonePro...
Looking for a #FOSS #VoiceAssistant with a much better #Privacy policy than #Mycroft (which just ate #Rhasspy)? #Genie is looking amazing, and uses unique algo's to understand requests that #Amazon #Alexa and #GoogleAssistant can't!
This is #Almond Gen 2, (developed by #Stanford Uni),. They've made big improvements. It also has a bunch of integrations with things like #HomeAssistant, #RSS , #Weather more.
The main thing they need now is more users! Check it out:
