#NewSpecies of ocean predator in the Atacama Trench
phys.org/news/2024-12-ocean-pr #DeepSea

A new large predator (#Amphipoda) hidden at hadal depths of the #AtacamaTrench: Johanna Weston et al. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

"Characterized by darkness and intense pressure, the ocean's #HadalZone seems uninhabitable, yet dozens of unique organisms call it home... A new study highlights one of those species... This #crustacean is the first large, active predatory #amphipod from these extreme depths"

Next up for #InsertAnInvert2024 is stygofauna: aquatic animals who live underground. This is a hard-carved and hand-printed linocut print of a little semi-transparent, white amphipod crustacean in the Neoniphargidae group from the Pilbara. This is a large, dry, sparsely populated region in northern part of Western Australia which is a global biodiversity hotspot for subterranean fauna 🧵1/2

Here’s a crustacean with crab in its name for #InsertAnInvert2024. Is it a crab? No, not a crab! This is a handprinted lino block print of the Yeti crab (Kiwa hirsuta), a crustacean with silky blond setae (resembling fur, which reminded scientists of the Abomnible Snowman) found on the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. The Yeti crab was found during the 2005 Census of Marine Life, near hydrothermal vents along the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge, 🧵1/n

May is crab month for #InsertAnInvert2024 🦀 & the first prompt is “true crab.” Time after time shrimp like crustaceans have evolved crablike forms (through a process called carcinization) & do a good job of pretending to be crabs, but this odd looking fellow is the real deal, a true crab. My red frog crab (Ranina ranina), also known as a spanner crab or Huỳnh Đế crab, is hand-printed on Japanese kozo paper. 🧵1/n
