I had some time to spend in a small town. People watched me as if I were "not normal". Well, I was so fascinated about the biodiversity of lichens and mosses and what they told me about the weather and air quality!
(Is it normal, to walk through a city without regarding mosses and lichens???)

A typical city lichen: whitish-grey to greenish grey it builds rings and circular "nests" on stone like car parks, terraces, balconies and even concrete floors. It can remain completely dry for months and freshens up when it rains. And it does not damage the surface at all. You don't have to kill it! These lichens survive even very bad air. They also like NO2 overfertilisation. Therefore they are very typical for cities.
An alien that you find only after heavy rainfalls: It looks glibbery, like black-dark-green jelly. It is scattered loosely over stone floors or paths, here on concrete pavement. The alien is called Nostoc.
When people don't wash their cars too often, you can even find this beautiful greenish-grey cladonia lichen growing in the window gaps on the insulation of a red car.

Beauty was abound when I snowshoed up a mountain earlier this week. While the views at the summit of nearby mountain peaks/valleys were beautiful, so were the small features at my feet. Check out the rime ice that formed on the boulders. This ice forms in windy fog and points into the wind as it is forming. #ice #mountains #lichen
