How I made the track 'Small Things Popping’.
This is one where I had something finished in 2022 but just never fully dug it, so I share what it sounded like and wrote a bit about how I reworked it.

"Leave the Light On" wouldn't have been possible without @elsemusic's efforts. I tagged her right at the beginning of the process because of her lovely laid back Fedivision 2024 entry "Tap My Toes", with exactly the vibe I was chasing. She provided the swinging drum track for this song and did all the recording and track cleanup for Aelyth's vocals, all in the middle of recording for sideSister's next album. When the vocal track turned up a few weeks later it was pretty much perfect.
I'm also grateful to my collaborators for letting me put my mediocre guitar talents on show. Mine's the strummed chords on the 2 of the verse and the main beats of the chorus. All spliced together in post because have you _seen_ the Fm11 chord fingering?
It's also been a new challenge for me putting together an album mixed and mastered by different artists. Everyone did a sterling job and I hardly had to meddle with anyone's track at all. I mainly became a wrangler for Faircamp manifest files.

I've never produced music with someone else's vocals before. In ways it's a bit constraining because I have to work with the recording I've got, but it's a good challenge to work within constraints sometimes. Aelyth's mezzo-soprano was perfect for this song, just what I imagined when I wrote it. I splurged during the November sales and bought Audio Modeling's SWAM Saxophones audio plugin (https://audiomodeling.com/swam-engine/solo-woodwinds/swam-saxophones/). This is an amazing VST for synthesizing saxophones, with so many dials to give the sound a natural feel. If you listen carefully you can even hear where I've pitch bent almost every note.
This song has been earworming me since I wrote it in November. If you attended my A Christmas Wasted With Deb Pickett show in December you have seen a rare performance of me doing my own vocals on the song. Fortunately now, the earworm has given way to, variously, every other song that's on the Comfy Collaborations album. Yay?

Though I chopped it into 6 tracks, it was written and recorded as one long song that just kept getting bigger and bigger. I originally envisioned it as a 10 minute song- but I kept feeling that the story had other places to go before it reached a conclusion. Thus it ended up being over 30 minutes long! This caused some weirdness in #reaper that hampered production somewhat. Nevertheless, doing it that way made it particularly easy to flow from one mood and tone to the next.

I enjoyed the production of this album a lot. Partially 'cause it follows a narrative and I like coming up with a story even more than I like consuming them, but also because I really enjoy playing the #bass #guitar , and so for this album I gave myself the task of letting the bass drive the melody most of the time. In the process I had a blast coming up with many chunky bass riffs, reminiscent (to my mind) of my favourites like early Pink Floyd or Hawkwind.
